Video Available: "The Southern Appalachians: A Changing World" is a 25-minute video targeted at middle school and high school students. It provides a visually appealing, multi-media introduction to the geology of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, showing how the landscapes we see today developed and continue to change, and how scientific study improves our understanding of how to better utilize our resources. Accompanying the video is a teacher's guide that provides a synopsis of the video and suggests activities and discussion topics that can expand students' knowledge of geologic history and processes. The teacher's guide is available online. Also included is Birth of the Mountains, a print version of the information presented in the video. Birth of the Mountains is also available online.
These materials were produced by the U. S. Geological Survey, with cooperation from the National Park Service, and are being distributed by SAMAB.
The video, teacher's guide, and print booklet have been distributed to middle schools, high schools, and environmental education centers in the Southern Appalachian region. Additional copies are available through the SAMAB office (865-974-4583 or samab@utk.edu). They will be provided at a cost of $5.00 each (to cover reproduction and shipping). Nonprofit organizations may order lots of five or more for resale.
